Christmas In Shanghai

Wishing you all a wonderful Christmas!
We were very fortunate to have my mother staying with us over the holidays. We started our day with some presents around our small tree. Peter made Poffertjes (Dutch quarter-sized pancakes), YUM! Late in the afternoon our Dutch friends Reink and Susan along with their daughter, Rosalie, and Reink's parents joined us for Christmas Dinner. Ahh the TURKEY!!!!!!!! Delicious! We were taking no chances on missing out on mashed potatoes again so we made garlic mashers and butter ones for the little people. Great food, friends, and family made the day extra special.
Even though we are far away from many of you that we love, you were thought of often today, and every day. We wish you a very merry Christmas and hope that you have the chance to enjoy the time with family and friends. We miss you!

With love,

Peter, Heather, Tyler & Truffle

PS. We head off to Tokyo tomorrow for a great visit with my Mom's AFS Exhange Student from high school, Keiko and Peter's IMD classmate, Satoshi. We will update the blog with more pictures on New Years.

Playoff Bound!!

What a game! We were lucky enough to watch Sunday's game against the Raiders where the Packers secured a Playoff spot. Peter's parents are nearing the end of their trip so it was great to celebrate a win after last weeks loss. We were all decked out in our Green and Gold finery Peter insists that wearing our support helps.

Here are a few shots of Ty in some of his Packer gear.

Ty's Grammy and Granddaddy brought 2 suitcases full of treats for us...thank you! Ty was quick to find the Packer Santa hat for his Daddy.

One of my favorite "rituals" during the game is grooming Truffle. Clearly, I need to find a new hiding spot for the brushes as Tyler brushing Truffle would not be a good thing.

Happy Thanksgiving

This is the second Thanksgiving in a row that we have been outside the US. While we miss our family tremendously, we have enjoyed experiencing Thanksgiving with our new family and friends. One of our favorite memories from the craziness that was IMD last year was the wonderful Thanksgiving we shared with our American IMD family.

This year, Peter worked again while I had my Dutch friend Susan and her daughter Rosalie over during the day. At night, we had the good fortune to share dinner with our good friends Grace (from MI) and her husband Jean Pierre (French). Times such as holidays make one miss ones' family and greatly appreciate the relationships and friendships you have be fortunate enough to establish. Ty was in a crazy active mood tonight so I did not get a picture of the 5 of us, however taking a note from Peter's Mom, I was smart enough to capture our family dressed (yes, I wore a dress) for Thanksgiving.
We miss you all and hope you have a wonderful and enriching holiday season. Enjoy each other's company ---and the fantastic food. We are thinking of you all! A special shout out to Heidi & Ken, hope you found some turkey! Wish we were sharing Heidi's great Southern cooking with you again this year!! Ty is sharing some hugs...

~Hugs and kisses from Shanghai,

Peter, Heather, Tyler & Truffle

Wishing We Were There!

The Portland crew (my brother Bob, his lovely wife Julie, and their 5 energetic and fun boys) are making the trek back to WI this week for a jammed pack week of fun with all of the family back home. We are hoping for a safe trip and a fantastic time for you all. Please send pics!
Ty dreaming of hanging with all those cousins!

Hugs & Kisses XOXOXO

Fall Fun with T2!

We have been taking advantage of the beautiful autumnal weather we have had...high 60s. The skies have been blue, filled with billowy clouds.

The boys and I have been enjoying some time running in the yard. A few days ago, Ty and Truffle discovered a sprinkler in our yard and squeeled and ran for cover when sprayed. Tyler is getting great at going up and down the steps of our patio as well as opening the folding screen door AND the gate to our yard. Oh joy! Time to teach Truf to herd his little lamb back inside.

It truly is a joy to see the love and friendship they have from one another. Truffle is so kind and tolerant of Tyler when he takes his toys or bones away. Ty often falls over when Truf bursts by. They love to share balls, snuggle and "wrestle" on the rug, and play tug of war with plastic bottles. The lonely days come a little more often here yet with these guys it is hard not to smile.

Soapbox: Protect Our Basic Freedoms; Support Our Troops

***There is an extended version of this available via e-mail with more details of what restrictions we face or have noticed personally. Let me know if you'd like it sent to you. The fact that I do not feel comfortable posting it should reinforce the fact that we do not enjoy the freedoms many of you have.

In our house, we are definitely divided on why/where our troops are deployed currently. One thing that is safe to say is that we full heartedly support the individual people and appreciate their commitment to our country and safe guarding of our freedoms as a whole.

Living in a place where our "basic" freedoms of speech are impeded upon daily truly makes one reflect on those freedoms we have taken for granted for many years. Case in point, I just tried to access a US.gov site on the Bill of Rights and it is blocked. I did find it here (thank you Google!): http://www.law.cornell.edu/constitution/constitution.billofrights.html

Recently, I was watching "The View" and the widow of Peter Jennings was on to promote a book about her late husband. She mentioned that Peter always carried a copy of the US Constitution with him. Interesting as Peter was Canadian until the early 2000s. When was the last time you reviewed our Constitution or Bill of Rights?

I received an e-mail with a link to send a free postcard to our troops. The effort is sponsored by Xerox, Manpower, Boys & Girls Clubs of America and many others. Kids created beautiful drawings to show their support. Please take a moment to send a card. Regardless of your view point of our current situation, our troops protect us, and our basic freedoms daily and have done so for centuries.

Rights do not come for free, it is our responsibility to support those who lay their lives, and those of the families that love them, on the line. Let's show them our respect and appreciation this holiday season!

Beijing and Beyond!

We have been enjoying having my dad and his wife visit us from Madison. This past weekend we left Shanghai for the city of Xi'an to see the Terracotta Warriors and Cave Dwellers and then to Beijing to tour Tian'an Men Square, the Forbidden City (home of the Chinese emperors), Summer Palace, Hutongs (courtyard housing for multiple families), and the Great Wall. All were a site to see!

Xi'an was very impressive with 1000s of soldiers found in a number of underground tombs. The scale was amazing, almost as much as the detail on the individual warriors. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate too much for us as we were met with heavy rain and weather in the 40s to 50s. The Cave Dwellers were a rare treat as there is only one man who is granted access to this neat world. The caves are dug out of clay rather than in the sides of mountains. You will have to see the pictures...which I promise to post in the coming days.
Ty catching a snooze while visiting the Terracotta Warriors

Our trip to Beijing started with a visit to the Great Wall. The weather again hampered us a bit with its howling winds and cold temps, but we enjoyed the overwhelming beauty. In order to easy scale the mountain, we rode in plastic "bob sleds" up and then down for the return trip. Once up we were able to climb, and I mean climb, the wall. I am really pleased we went on an off day as there were still thousands of people there. The view is amazing and definitely a must do. As Peter commented numerous times, "I have waited 9 months for natural beauty in China." Well the Wall is not natural, but the surrounding rolling mountains, and trees and hills did not disappoint. This is now a must see on the Klug tour and we are excited to take Peter's parents there when they visit us this month.

We were further impressed by the hutongs and the great palaces and imperial cities that Beijing offers. These great treasures are astounding and take excess to a new level.

We are now back in Shanghai and will explore a few more places with our guests. Our trip to Beijing is definitely a highlight. One we hope to share with many more visitors...hint, hint.

Happy Halloween!!!!!!

We celebrated Halloween last Friday, but back home Halloween is in full swing, I imagine. We hit a few homes but dressing up was the most fun part! Tyler went as a cow, I went as a doggie, Truffle went as Brett Favre, and my dad's wife, Bonnie, went as a bear. We had a lot of fun...here are some pics.

Setting the Swing High

In another one of my crazy attempts to utilize the space we have to keep Tyler as happy and safe from pollution and filth we have upgraded the garage. I know, most people use their garages for their cars and storage. Well, we don't have a car so we have a double car garage with just patio furniture and a pop a shot basketball game among some storage.

This past Summer I added the indoor pool concept. Having recently found out that our compound's indoor pool would be heated this year, I have decided to reallocate the space. Tyler so enjoyed the beach we have added an indoor sandbox and as of this afternoon, a swing! I found it during our trip to Singapore and convinced Peter that we should lug it back with us. Boy was that the right call as you can see from the picture below.

Peter still thinks I am crazy, but the boys are happy. Well Truffle not so much. He got bonked in the head during one swing. Peter is always curious about what creative idea I may have next :) Yes, I do have my eyes on an indoor playset and slide.

Greetings From Maldives

Wishing you were here with us...Where in the world are they you say? At long last, Peter got his dream of staying on a "deserted" island. We are in a Scuba Diver's paradise, The Maldive Islands. Located off the Southern tip of India close to the equator is a slice of heaven. Peter is actually considering returning which is a first. He normally likes to try out as many vacation spots as possible before selecting a favorite. From the moment we arrived at the airport in Male, life has been made much easier on us. We can truly relax and enjoy the sights and sounds. Oh, and the SMELLS!!!!! I LOVE IT! The scented towels and soaps, the oils they have pumping throughout the resort. After months in Shanghai where you do not breathe through your nose, to be able to smell lemon and flowers is a dream for me.

Too bad for Truf that we had to leave him in Shanghai because we are all having a spectacular time: snokeling, my taking scuba lessons, Peter finally using his Dive License and doing dives with me, haircuts, playing in the sand, watching the fish swim at our feet, taking a speedboat out to see dolphins and blue marlin in their natural habitat, having Ty's own mini crab race at breakfast on our table, and Tigs falling asleep in a hammock at Kids Club. The resort is great and the people here are amazing!!!!! Always smiling and happy, anticipating our needs and entertaining Tyler is the most gentle, loving manner. All of this service is done with a genuine care for their guests' well being and happiness. Oh and the FOOD!!!!!! Yummy! I will not want to step on scale when we return. The food is absolutely amazing!

Peter has spent years researching and dreaming of this vacation. He selected the island and his hard work paid off. It is just our style. There are no hidden agendas or pretension here. I think we have found a paradise that is well worth the trip to get here.

There will be more pictures to come in an album but we are trying to enjoy and experience our 7 days in bliss first :)

Mommy & Daddy left me here all by myself and went scuba diving...

3-0 GO Favre GO!!

We are loving being able to watch the Packer games lately, especially the 3-0 record. So far I have not had to worry about Peter spiking the baby which is a stark contrast from last year.

Here Ty and I are during this week's game

Oh, in case you can't get a hold of us for a while here is a hint as to what we are up to

Truf and Josephine will hold down the fort while we hang out at the beach.

Cool! Our First Typhoon!

Yes, you heard me correctly. We are expecting Super Typhoon Wipha to make a direct hit on Shanghai in the next 24-36 hours. Exciting stuff I tell you. I just thought we were having a rainy spell.

As luck would have it we have 6 men in our yard laying sod today. The pictures of the whole sod story to come in another post. They do everything by hand and shovel. Breaks your heart really if you know the machinery they could be using. I felt badly for them today as the temperature has finally dropped to the low 70s and they were getting drenched. I brought out some green tea (lu cha) and made some blueberry muffins for them.

Thank goodness Peter was told at work that they may cancel work Wed or we would have never known a Typhoon was coming. So is our life with no real English news. Never a dull moment. Never thought I would be able to check "brave a Typhoon" off of my To Do List. Well, it wasn't really on the list ;)

Anyway, not to worry you as this is much like a hurricane I guess. And yes Mom, I have ordered extra water to be delivered and am heading out to stock up on some food. Peter would argue we could survive for months on my stockpile. Should make for an exciting few days.

TV Alert: Survivor CHINA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously! I was surfing the web today to catch up on all the new shows for the Fall Season and ran across Survivor. I did not know until today that it is taking place in CHINA!!!!!!! How great! I really hope it is a good one. Perhaps it may give a new perspective on what life here may be like...well I am sure we do not have it that bad compared to the Survivors.

Check it out, you know we will be glued. Thursday nights on CBS.

Oh, and for those of you visiting us soon, I promise you do not have to sleep outside nor will I feed you anything funny. :)

Cheeks!

I could not resist...this is the most fun and cutest time we have at home.

Truffle's Haircut!

Okay, you may not be as excited as I am but it has been 7 months since Truffle's last haircut. The unbelievable humidity really put us through our paces this Summer as Truffle's fur decided to mat and knot in a manner I have never seen. Peter and I diligently worked almost daily to brush Truf and free him of his knots. Many times getting the scissors out to help the knot break up. At one point we even resorted to getting out the buzz clippers I had used on Peter. Truf took all of this like a champ...big surprise :)

Well my 6 month quest for a groomer that would be kind to Truffle (seriously a problem here) finally paid off. A great lady who was originally from Phoenix with 20+ years of grooming experience buff, puffed, and polished my beloved "Pookie." She took two and a half hours but did not shave Truf one bit. I am so thrilled at the result!!! Truffle is too and it is evident in his prancing.

One less thing on my Treasure Hunt for things I need to find in Shanghai!!

Preparation for the Big Game

Okay so I am a little behind in posts, but I think this video is cute enough to merit a late post.

Last week as we anxiously awaited the Packer's Opening Game Tyler busted out his finest pair of Packer jammies and did the closest thing he knows to spiking a football. Hey, Peter takes what he can get at age one. I am certain by the time the football season is over, Tyler will know that we throw footballs when the Packers play...let's hope in excitement and celebration. Maybe he needs a pair of Bucks jammies?

He does have cheering down pat.

The Next Van Gogh??

For Tyler's birthday, I searched high and low for the Crayola Store in Shanghai. Luckily I found it and was able to buy crayons, eashable markers, and fingerpaints. All with the knowledge that these were non-toxic. Super important if you have been reading the paper or watching the news lately. If you think the US has problems with toxic stuff, imagine what they keep for their own citizens. Okay, maybe don't imagine. I don't want to scare away our future visitors ;)

I tried a few weeks ago to introduce Ty to the wonderful world of coloring with crayons. He was more interested in eating the crayons--glad they are non-toxic. Today I thought we would try our hand at markers. He LOVED them! Even managed to get some of the colors on the paper. I have now officially turned Peter's college dorm room table and our old IKEA coffee table into Tyler's craft tables.

Here is a pic of the big guy in action:

A Shout Out to the Yas!

Here is one of Tyler's latest moments caught on tape....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKM1teyrwO0

The Ball Pit

A few months ago Tyler discovered the ball pit at our clubhouse. He loved crawling around but he loved throwing the balls out even more. A few weeks ago I stumbled across some balls at our Walmart--yes we have one but do not get too excited. An Active Graco Pack and Play and 500 balls later, Tyler's ball pit is a reality in our family room.

Here is some video of Ty's very own play land. Enjoy!

To My Bucka Buddy!!

We had lots of fun when Ned and Jen recently visited Shanghai. Ned was able to spend the last week with us and Tyler quickly found a buddy. Tyler loves saying his new word "Bucka" to Ned. We also found a new use for Peter's ottoman. Ned, having just graduated Law School and taken the CA Bar has suggested we trademark "Bucka" for all products, dance moves, and comic book exclamations. Consider it done :)

Check out the video of the Bucka Buddies by clicking on my links or accessing You Tube here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0MJhYsyJvo

Let me know how the video turns out on your end and if you'd like to see more.

Thanks for sharing your vacation with us, Ned & Jen!! We had a blast! Ty cried when he watched this video.

Wanted -Your Meal Time Suggestions

Tyler is loving eating table food! While the accomplishment is great, I am scratching my head for what to feed him over here. Many of you have heard my shock at the price of food here..$11 pack of bacon or $9 pack of shredded cheese anyone?? Yes, these are imported from the US and I am thrilled to have them! I am very careful with what Ty eats or should I say the source of his food supply. You've read the headlines. If that stuff makes it way to the US imagine what is in our stuff over here. Okay, maybe let's not imagine.

I have access to a lot of vegetables and organic produce so we try to eat a lot of veggie based items, pasta, quiche, homemade pizza, grilled cheese sandwiches, salads, casseroles. Since the food items we have access to is limited as well as varied depending on supply, a wide range of recipes is golden.

I recently received Baby Bistro, a great cookbook with loads of meal ideas and recipes for Toddlers and their parents. We have really enjoyed eating the family friendly meals and I am on the hunt for some more meal ideas for the entire family (ideally somewhat healthy). Since I have experienced many delicious dinners and holidays catered by you, what better source than you!

Please send any ideas or suggestions for snacks, main courses, side dishes to me via comments or my e-mail. You can also photo copy any recipes and mail them to us:

Greatly appreciate your help!

Go PACK!!!!

As many of you know, since we have been out of the US Peter spends hours every week during football season dodging the Internet, tv, and family/friends/co-workers until he can listen to the game online or watch the weekend's Packer game. This year we have been blessed with the technology of Slingbox and very willing family members (thanks Mom & Joel) who have let us wreak havoc with their Directv and broadband services so we can watch US television here. Watching the weekly game is a religious experience for Peter and last year it involved a lot of praying ;)

This setup is great because we have the ability to watch the games, huge improvement over listening. However, since you are 13 hours behind us, it usually takes us a day or two to get to the game. Thank you to those of you who did not tell him who won as Peter loves the surprise. I think we have a new Packer Backer in the works...time to get him on the waiting list for tickets??
Hmmm...looks like Tyler might prefer Baby Einstein still.

Happy Birthday, Tyler!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Our dear, sweet, baby boy is One!!! How quickly the time goes. Tyler had a banner day today. Normally, Peter sneaks into Tyler's bedroom to kiss him while he is sleeping before heading off to work but today Tyler is waiting for him. Breakfast consisted of blueberry waffles, lunch was grilled cheese and dinner was cheese tortellinis with pesto...oh and do not forget the cake! We are starting a few traditions here with Tyler, eating birthday cake first and taking a picture in Daddy's Favre jersey.

I created a train cake and landscape with a mountain tunnel and lake. I had to make do with the supplies at hand but all in all I think it was a success. It was yummy either way. No complaints from any of the boys.

Tyler loved opening his gifts one by one and was delighted to find the seams in the paper to enable his ripping. He inspected each gift. Thanks to everyone for the great gifts and cards!! Tyler will have many fun days a head with the blocks, Legos, crayons, chalk, and finger paint. I can't wait!!!!! Who knows what the next year has in store....it will be great!

We miss you all and are looking forward to spending future birthdays and special occasions together. Thank you for all the birthday songs and well wishes. We love you!

I have uploaded pictures from the day in my online album. Take a look. I hope to upload the video soon.

Yangshuo China Trip--Pictures added

We recently took at trip to what many consider to be China’s most beautiful province, Guilin. A 2.5 hour plane and 1 hour car ride brought us to Yangshuo. The scenery was striking! Lush green trees and plants covered the sides of the Karst hills. Karst is a type of hill that is very rounded and made of limestone. Almost like an oval rather than the jagged topography we have in many mountain and hill sides in the US and Europe. They are very graceful and plentiful. Supposedly, the flat lands have sunk leaving all the Karst behind. Not sure if I buy that explanation given how flat the land was as well the fact that there was more flat land than hills.

During our long weekend retreat we had the opportunity to visit villages where there was no running water except by hand pump, climb up 1,000 feet to the top of Moon Hill (800 steps each way) in the 95+ degree weather, see water buffalo up close while they were taking a dip in the river, watch a pirated copy of “Transformers” at the poolside restaurant while we ate a late dinner, wander into a tourist trap complete with crepes, fire cooked pizza, and French cuisine.

The natural beauty was something we had both longed for as it is rare in Shanghai. One night, we were fortunate enough to buy tickets to Yangshuo’s famous water and light show. Going into I thought it was going to be a bust, but tickets were hard to come by for the sold out shows. How good could a performance be if they had only 50,000 people to draw from in the town? The evening started off a little rocky when we were swarmed by 20+ people with cameras and video cameras taking pics of Ty. Thank goodness he was in his infant carrier for protection. The 1.5 hour performance was incredible. We were amazed!!!!! If they can put on a performance with singing, water displays, gymnasts, 100+ children in costumes that lit up as they “walked” across the water in a town like this I can only imagine what the opening and closing ceremonies are going to be like for the Olympics in Beijing 2008. I guess you will all find out as the director and choreographers that put on this production have been hired for the Olympics. I would not miss it!!!!!

What we did not long for, nor anticipate, was the greediness of our hired driver who every day refused for over 1.5 hours to drive us to places unless we paid him more money. We were quickly reminded by this guy’s actions that though we have the privilege to visit this beautiful land, we are still outsiders and should be taken advantage of. The tourists that visit this area are predominantly Asian so we stick out pretty easily.

The most important thing I have taken away from this trip was how fortunate we are to have the opportunity to become educated people. There are many farmers and painters that are affected by China’s one child policy and must decide whether it is better to have their 7-13 year old educated or use them in their fields or shops to help provide income for the family. Those that are lucky enough to go to school must pass a test at age 13 to see if they qualify for high school. If they do not pass their families will need to pay a very large sum of money to attend school. A sum, that given their poverty, they cannot afford.

I was very moved by the fact that Tyler has every possible advantage to learn and create a good and happy life for himself simply because he has the freedom to go to school. I hope that in the years to come, we will be reminded of our trip and explain to Tyler the importance of being able to attend school and choose one’s own path in life. It is a honor and gift that should not be taken lightly.

Ty & Truf Double the trouble, double the love

Give a call over to our house and you may find yourself listening to converstations that seem normal to us, but not so normal to the caller:

"Truf, walk away." "Defend your bone!" "Ty, if you are going to kiss Truffle, please close your mouth." "No, Truf does not need any more Cheerios." "Truf, I love what you have done with Ty's hair." "Truffle is not for climbing, Tyler." "Yuck, how am I going to get scrambled egg out of your fur?" and now my favorite..."TYLER, that food is Truffle's, not yours!"

If you have had the pleasure of spending time with both of our boys, you know that Peter and I consider them to be brothers of a sort. They can usually be found hanging out together, with Truf keeping a watchful eye on whatever Tyler is doing. Letting out a growl at people in our yard (yup, he now growls after the break in) when Ty is playing by the window. Now that Ty is more mobile, the rivaly has escalated to new heights. Truffle and Tyler have taken to playing tug of war with one another on a daily basis. First it was using diaper wipes, then bones, and most recently my headbands. They love the give and take. Truffle puts up with a lot from Tyler and now is reaping some of the rewards when Ty eats. As soon as Tyler sits in his chair, Truffle bolts into the kitchen and lays at Tyler's feet eagerly awaiting the scraps.

Peter and I supervise but are hands off for the most part letting them resolve things. It is also funny how each one vies for "Momma Time" with me. It is great to be loved.

And, yes, Tyler was caught red handed the other day with his hands in Truffle's bowl and 3 kibbles in his mouth. YUCK!

A Banner Week

Ty has finally done it! The littlest Klug can now walk a bit unaided. He is so proud of himself when he realizes what he is doing. Truf sometimes prefers that he stay crawling so he has a tendency to knock him over when it suits him. Brotherly love!

Tonight, Ty and Truf (T2 as we call them) decided to play tug of war with a diaper wipe. They are pretty evenly matched for strength and both are rather sneaky with their techniques. Truf prefers to swing a paw over the top of the wipe while Ty cries. Surprisingly, both methods work on swaying the advantage in their favor. I truly feel that I have two boys....well sometimes three :)

This week, Tyler also chose to wean himself. Time for this Momma to bust out the champagne I have been chilling for a few months. I received the special bottle as a birthday/Mother's Day present. Yippee! I will miss the special time (11.5 months) we shared though freedom is a great thing, not to be under estimated.

Ty and I have substituted snuggling while he drinks his bottle and from time to time, Truf can be found joining us. Time to start using up the stockpile of formula I accumulated. We are definitely a snugly family and Truf is king snuggler. Well at least for now.
